Together with eleven adolescents (m/f/x) between 15 and 21 the Israeli choreographer Reut Shemesh creates a powerful dance production about masculinity, identity and rebellion but also about vulnerability. She found inspiration with the Ultras, the hard core supporters who loudly and actively defend a football team. What is the group feeling the Ultras identify with ? What vulnerability hides under that often aggressive layer of movement, song and outfit ?
For the creation of Ultra Reut Shemesh brings together two fascinations : on the one hand the attraction of symbols and uniforms and on the other the questions she poses herself as the mother of a young son. What is it like to grow up as a boy in a time when there is so much uncertainty about the role of the man ?
In recent years Reut Shemesh has been the resident artist of the important German tanzhaus nrw in Düsseldorf. In earlier performances she let herself be inspired among others by Israeli female professional soldiers (Leviah) or German majorettes (Cobra Blonde). During NEXT 2023 she also presents Atara.
