Dorothée Munyaneza was born in Rwanda as the daughter of a journalist and a minister. She left the capital Kigali at the age of 12 to settle with her family in England. There she became a musician, an author, a dancer and a choreographer. She worked together with great names such as Nan Goldin, Robyn Orlin or Rachid Ouramdane and afterwards created her own projects. In the diptych Samedi Détente (2014) and Unwanted (2017) she tells us about the horror of the Rwandese genocide and global violence through song, theatre, dance and music.
Munyaneza's latest creation is sunnier and more positive. In Mailles the Rwandese focuses on the black diaspora. For this she gathers six women around her whose path she crossed during her travels. Actresses and performers but also a flamenco dancer and a cook. All of them have encountered blood and tears, have sought their way through several countries and languages but have also learned the value of solidarity or the linking power of stories and art.
In Mailles together they relate an intriguing tale that leads from Brazil to South Africa, from Chicago to Sevilla, from Bamako to Haiti. This choral piece celebrates resilience, the body and the power of women. 'Do we come from where we were born, from where we die or somewhere in between ?', the Senegalese author Felwine Sarr asks himself in Méditations Africaines.
