What to play ? Le Grand Sommeil derives its power from an absence. Initially, the piece was meant to be a duet between a little girl (Jeanne) and a woman (Helena). After six months of rehearsing the participation of Jeanne appeared to be impossible for medical and legal reasons, after which the girl withdrew from the performance.
As a consequence this solo brings together two persons in one figure. The explosive actress and dancer Helena de Laurens contains the memory of her previous partner in an eleven-year-old pre-adolescent girl called Jeanne. In the skin of this 'large child' she creates a hybrid sometimes playful, sometimes monstrous personage that doesn't give a damn about decency and the common convictions about what girls should be like. By telling us from an adult body about a child and her contact with the family, the state and art, Le Grand Sommeil questions the norms we are attached to and shows how closely the construction of yourself and the artistic creation are linked. A journey of discovery into the hidden part of childhood.
Marion Siéfert is a young French director, author and performer. Her artistic work spreads over performances, films and texts. After Deux ou trois choses que je sais de vous, Le Grand Sommeil is her second play. Since 2017 Siéfert has been connected as an artist to La Commune CDN d'Aubervilliers.
