Energetic, virile and sensitive dance performance about the physical impact of loss.
After a successful career as a dancer with Wim Vandekeybus (Ultima Vez) and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (Eastman), the Portuguese choreographer Helder Seabra is well on his way to put himself on the map as a choreographer as well. In his first major performance When The Birds Fly Low The Wind Will Blow he offered a fascinating mix of melancholy, poetry and exuberant joie de vivre in combination with live music by Maya's Moving Castle. Also his second own production is a winner. In Absentia is an energetic, virile and sensitive performance in which three male dancers -next to Seabra himself also Ricardo Ambrózio and Jeffrey Schoenaers- confront each other and the brilliant music Elias Devoldere and Stijn Vanmarsenille have created especially for this piece and play live. Goaded by their fat guitar basses and steaming punk rhythms the dancers explore the emotional, mental and physical impact of loss.
Whether it is the loss of a beloved one, a love or friendship or a fantastic book : crying is permitted in this piece, even for men. At the same time the dancers do not throw in the towel and look for a very physical way to express their grief. This piece never becomes heavy ; laughter is allowed and as a spectator you often sit on the edge of your seat because of the daredevil movements of the dancers. They crash into the wall, hit their heads against each other like stubborn rams, jump high into the air and fall brusquely on their knees until they reach the edge of exhaustion. For this piece Seabra & co dig deep into the male soul. Feelings like unrest, jealousy and uncertainty are translated to the stage in brute physical answers. At any rate De Standaard is convinced : “In Absentia is a testosteron bomb that explodes in your face, delightful to watch.” Be there !
