Illuminations

Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille (France)

60 minutes
Reduction: € 5,00

Spread over numerous museums and libraries, France preserves a wealth of manuscripts from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, many of which are illuminated. Their pages contain gems of miniatures, everyone of which was meticulously drawn by hand. Three museums (the Augustinian Museum in Toulouse, the Museum for the Fine Arts in Angers and the Palace for the Fine Arts in Lille) simultaneously focus on these manuscripts and works of art of the same period (reliquaries, chalices, candleholders, chests, censers etc.) The Palace for the Fine Arts explicitly wants to establish a dialogue between past and present.

To that purpose, Jan Fabre was invited to enter into a confrontation with the old manuscripts. In his work as a plastic artist, choreographer and theatre maker Jan Fabre likes to refer to the history of art, so he is the right man in the right place to do this. For example, he will show an evocation of “The Garden of Earthly Delights” by Jeroen Bosch, in which the beetles, which are so typical of his plastic work, will feature prominently. He will also create a series of emblems (crosses and skulls). It will be a remarkable confrontation, a fascinating dialogue, ancient art seen from a contemporary point of view. Experience how worlds of ideas cross and fecundate each other across the centuries.
