Who looks and who is watched ?
How do stories form us and the roles we play ? Should we put up a fight against stereotypes, however tempting the game of seeing and being seen may be ? What if the moth cannot resist the temptation of the flame ?
In GAZE three women are exhibited in a giant terrarium. Imprisoned in a world in which looking and being looked at is the criterion, they investigate which role their body can (still) play in their quest for recognition. GAZE is an ode to the original sin and an attack on the hypocrisy of virtuousness.
In the performance GAZE choreographer Laura Neyskens, together with dramaturge Raphaël Vandeweyer, goes in search of which power our body possesses. In a visual, anarchistic and poetic way they investigate how dominant stories form our body and the impact of this in a world in which above all we want to be seen/liked.
Laura Neyskens started her professional career as an 11-year-old in a theatre production of Arne Sierens and Alain Platel. She continues her path as a dancer with Les Ballets C de la B. There she meets Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, which results in a collaboration of many years. Meanwhile she plays in productions of a.o Guy Cassiers, Olympique Dramatique, Lisi Estaras and Koari Ito. Since 2017 Laura often works together with Chokri Ben Chikha. Within his company Action Zoo Humain she works as a choreographer, assistant-producer, coach and repetiteur. Next to her work as a performing choreographer she is also taking steps to develop her own signature as a dance theatre maker.
Raphaël Vandeweyer obtained his master Theatre Science (dramaturgy) at the University Utrecht and his bachelor Cultural Science at the University Maastricht. After working for several cultural organisations in Brussels, he was dramaturge with Action Zoo Humain. At the moment he is active as a freelance dramaturge and writer with several artists. In this function, he worked with a.o Muziektheater Transparant, artists' collective Het Verbond (Nl) and youth theatres Tint and fABULEUS and with artists such as Chokri Ben Chikha, Maxime Waladi, Renée Goethijn, Jelle Stiphout, Jan Sobrie and Wouter Deltour.
