Have you ever heard of La Sarabia (1878-1988), Nyota Inyoka (1896-1971), François (Féral) Benga (1906-1957) and Leila Bederkhan (1903-1986) ? Everyone of them are coloured dancers and choreographers who toured Europe at the beginning of the 20^th century. They had talent and prestige but too often they were reduced to exotism and disappeared between the folds of the western canon.

One century later choreographer Amanda Piña breathes new life into their work. Which dance language characterised them ? How can we understand their work today ? What remains intact of the context in which they operated ? Four mesmerising dancers pay a tribute to the forgotten icons that preceded them. EXÓTICA is an exorcism and a ritual, a re-enactment and a celebration. Discover the fascinating figures behind the blind spots of the history of dance.

The Chilean-Mexican Amanda Piña researches the political and social aspects of movement and the native knowledge that designs the world. Her work, with a strong decolonising bias, navigates between visual art and choreography.

EXÓTICA Soundsystema was created during the development of EXÓTICA . It's made up of several of the show's collaborators. The musical collective wrote several songs for the show, but has an even wider repertoire, which they are delighted to share with the NEXT audience.
