A dance procession to unsettle colonial structures
Choreographer Zwoisy Mears-Clarke invites the public into a newly created folk dance inspired by German mask traditions. This is not a procession to drive away winter, but one to unsettle the lingering local structures of colonialism.
Choreographer Zwoisy Mears-Clarke invites the public into a newly created folk dance inspired by German mask traditions. This is not a procession to drive away winter, but one to unsettle the lingering local structures of colonialism.
In a slow procession, masked figures dancetogether. Bells hanging between their shoulder blades chime with each move. As they dance, they sing stories and describe what they see, feel and do — weaving storytelling with dance and audio description together. Their voices, sounds, costumes, and movements draw the audience into a shared space of heightened presence and ever-shifting perception.
Zwoisy Mears-Clarke is a choreographer of the encounter. Zwoisy uses the expanded potentiality of dance, audio description, poetry and storytelling to confront forms of systemic oppression, such as (neo)colonialism, racism, gender discrimination and ableism, to open encounters that might otherwise seem unreachable.
