In ATARA choreopgrapher Reut Shemesh focuses on women in the Jewish-orthodox world on the one hand and the secular world on the other. Together with three dancers-performers she wonders what femininity, female sexuality and their place in society can be.

Reut Shemesh herself grew up in a family that lived both in the secular and in the orthodox way. By means of re-enactments of events from her own surroundings via photography, text and movement, a dynamic dialogue between different views originates. Clichés, prejudices and doubts are equally dealt with and if necessary smashed to smithereens.

Reut Shemesh is an Israeli choreographer living in Cologne and working in Germany, Israel and the Netherlands. Her spectrum stretches from contemporary dance over experimental film to poetry. For LEVIAH, a performance, short film and collection of stories about the trauma of female Israeli soldiers, Shemesh received the Cologne Tanztheaterpreis. In NEXT she also presents Ultra, a cooperation with fABULEUS, the Leuven theatre and dance centre for young people.
