Citéphilo is a series of conversations in which researchers from various disciplines have the floor and renew our understanding of the relationship between the human and the not-human world. This year we welcome the French anthropologist Anne-Christine Taylor, specialised in the culture and world view of indigenous peoples in the Amazon region, more particularly the Jivaro and Achuar peoples of present Ecuador and Peru. Her work combines deep field research with a philosophical reflection on kinship, myths and rituals. She is known as one of the most important voices within the French anthropology of the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century.
Anne-Christine Taylor studied anthropology in France. She was heavily influenced by the work of Claude Lévi-Strauss, the founder of structuralism in anthropology. For years she carried out field work in the Amazon region where she lived with and worked with several native communities. Her close collaboration with these peoples led to a profound insight into their cosmology and social structures.
There are several publications to her name and she played an important role in the foundation and development of the musée du quai Branly, which is dedicated to non-western art and cultures. As the scientific director of the museum she worked on the integration of anthropological insight into the exhibitions with respect for the original cultures. Taylor emphasizes the importance of listening to and learning from indigenous voices and criticizes Western attempts to interpret these cultures without giving them the floor.  Her work is an example of how museums can deal with objects from other cultures : not as exotic artefacts but as carriers of living stories.
The Citéphilo series started in 2022 with her husband Philippe Descola. After that we welcomed Isabelle Stengers and Tim Ingold. The conversation with Anne-Christine Taylor will be moderated by  Citéphilo member Véronique Chatenay-Dolto.
