"Listening in detail, is that where performer and audience meet?" (Alma Soderberg, Etcetera)
Body becomes instrument. Space becomes sound box. Dance becomes a language to describe what you hear. Sound a tool to describe what you see. If anybody can detect unsuspected possibilities in the relationship between dance and music , it's Alma Soderberg.
In The Listeners from 2020, the Swedish choreographer continues her research with nine dancers of the famous Cullberg ensemble. Here too, rhythm, voice and movement are the basis of a layered performance. Especially your own perception is at the centre of it. In the polyrhythmic music you can make your own choice which layers of the rhythm you focus on. Between sound and movement, dance and music, the spectator/listener discovers a surprising freedom.
Cullberg may well be the most important company of contemporary dance in Sweden. With seventeen dancers now, it tours the whole world and works together with international choreographers and artists.
Swedish Alma Soderberg lives and works in Brussels and has shown her creations at the most important European stages and festivals. In 2016 she was awarded the Birgit Cullberg Grant in her native country, named after the founder of the company. After mostly solos and creations for small groups, The Listeners is her first collaboration with Cullberg. At NEXT they also present their new co-creation Noche.
