Last year at NEXT the Italian avant-garde collective Motus made an appearance that didn't pass unnoticed with Caliban Cannibal, their high-profile production about the inhumane reception of asylum seekers. The extraordinary actress Silvia Calderoni comes back this year with MDLSX, a mesmerising solo performance about what it is like to be different from the rest. Is she beautiful or ugly ? Young or old ? Seductive or repulsive ? And above all, is she a man or a woman ? Calderoni embodies it all. In this energetic ode to freedom and diversity Calderoni explores the limits of the body and she escapes any (gender) categorization. “She seems like quicksilver or another still to be discovered fluid”, wrote The New York Times. “No human body can transform as quickly as lightning as this stunning actress.” To the formidable soundtrack, from Placebo to The Knife to Stromae, she shares her personal life story, while kicking around wildly and working herself into a sweat, showing herself from her most vulnerable side.
MDLSX is an explosive project with autobiographical fragments. A black tragedy in which the border between fiction and reality is blurred. A trip of an hour and a half that leaves nobody unperturbed.
In 1991 directors Enrico Casagrande and Daniela Nicolò founded Motus, an independent company based in the Italian Rimini. For 25 years they have been making groundbreaking productions that also tour internationally. For this company there are no limits in art forms and possibilities just like borders between countries are a superfluous concept to them. Motus has recently been picked up by the legendary La Mama Theatre in New York, where they are artist in residence for the following years. Motus strongly believes in theatre as a means to cause social change. Their productions are never noncommittal and yet always very attractive. MDLSX is a performance you mustn't miss !
