In this Italian Shakespeare the bard really comes home
Shakespeare's Macbeth, performed in the language of Sardinia, and, in the pure Elizabethan tradition, by a completely male cast. That was the dream of Alessandro Serra, founder of the Italian theatre company Teatropersona. Actually, the analogies between Shakespeare's Macbeth and the tradition in Sardinia are numerous : think of the sombre sounds of cowbells and old instruments, the relation with Dionysos, the unbelievable precision of the dances and songs. But think just as well of surly masks, blood-red wine and a dark winter. Serra's Macbettu is not the umpteenth performance that wipes the floor with Shakespeare but a little work of art that goes back to the original completely in its own way. In the melodious Sardinian accent the literary power of Shakespeare's work is being done full justice.
Alessandro Serra in an interview with Tempi Moderni : 'Macbeth continuously thinks of tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow... He is terribly progressive and cannot live in the present, that would drive him mad. That almost makes him an emblem of this accelerated society, a society that rushes all the time and that is mentally not ready to accept a technology that may make us immortal but does consume our soul. Because of this desperate inability to live in the present, Macbeth feels very lively and close.'
In 1999 Alessandro Serra founded the Compagnia Teatropersona in which he emerged in almost all functions : he wrote and produced, but was also responsible for the costumes, light and sound. With the company Serra toured in Italy, France, Switzerland, Korea, Russia, Spain, Bulgaria, Poland and Germany. Macbettu is the most successful performance in the history of Teatropersona : after numerous lyrical reviews, it was elected as the best play of the season 2016-2017 at the Premio Ubu-awards, the most important Italian theatre prizes.
Alessandro Serra's MACBETTU accomplishes just that : the unveiling of the environmental matrix of Shakespeare's work.' Alessandro Cutillo – Milanoteatri
