Visual masterpiece about revenge and reconciliation.
“The most important manifestation of contemporary Colombian theatre” (FITB)
As a veteran of the Colombian civil war, Salvo Castello was closely involved with a lot of bloodbaths and massacres. He was sentenced to house arrest in a far and cold country : here he's only accompanied by the poltergeists of his past, like that one boy with the harelip (“labio de liebre”) and the rest of his family, all of them killed by Castello.
Labo de liebre is a visual masterpiece about revenge and reconciliation. Actor and director Fabio Rubiano Orjuela draws the recent Colombian history not in a moralistic way but by means of an astonishing storm of images, driven on by a cartload of costumes and theatrical surprise techniques. There are a lot more people behind the stage than on it !
Expect a shakespearean ride during which you are thrown from one perplexity into the next. Just like king Macbeth, Castello is plagued by the victims of his deeds – which makes him a victim as well. Labo de liebre teems with this sort of ambiguities.
Rubiano plays Castello with verve and a biting irony. With Labo de liebre he confirms his reputation as one of the most important theatre makers of Colombia. In 2013 he won the National Prize for mise en scène.
Meanwhile Rubiano has written more than twenty plays which he produces under and with Teatro Petra, the company he founded in 1985 with Marcela Valencia. Labo de liebre was developed on the occasion of their 30th anniversary.
