POSTPONED TO 20.11.21 AT ESPACE PASOLINI VALENCIENNES
Filibustering is a well-tried strategy in the American Senate. If a senator wants to block a controversial bill, he speaks so long that the vote has to be postponed to a later session. But filibustering is also quite a physical and mental task : the speaker cannot afford a pause and can only find physical support by leaning on the desk with his hands because he cannot put his elbows on it. A lot of senators therefore undergo a physical preparation and wear sneakers or pampers to perform the strange choreography that is required by the American constitution.
Performer Bryan Campbell wrote his own filibuster, which lasts six to eight hours. For this monologue he imposed on himself the same restrictions as the American senator. With one difference : he doesn't want to stop a law but in the same breath he goes through the most important subjects of our globalized and capitalist time : from Donald Trump to the rise of extreme right, from police violence against black Americans to the refugee crisis. In one physical and rhetorical tour de force Campbell switches from humour to seriousness, from confidence to vulnerability, from rationality to madness. Spectators can come or go any moment.
Bryan Campbell is an American artist who lives and works in Paris. Since 2008, he has developed an oeuvre in several disciplines, from visual art to text, from film to choreography.
