What happens in the body of the musician when he plays ? How does music make a body move, or even dance, very concretely and precisely, but also invisibly within ? For more than ten years Pol Pi -seen at NEXT 2018 (ECCE (H)OMO en ALEXANDRE) and NEXT 2021 (daté.e.s) has been developing a visionary choreographic language. His performances focus on intimacy and remembrance and attach special importance to the relationship between movement and sound. One of the inspirations is his own background as a classical musician – Pi played the viola for a long time.
His newest performance, IN YOUR HEAD, is based on an important 20th century piece of music : the String Quartet nr 8 in C minor of Dmitri Sjostakovitsj. During his study of classical music Pol Pi played this emblematic piece by the Russian composer, dedicated to 'the victims of war and fascism' and experienced an even physical intensity of which he still feels the impact today.
He now puts the agonizing echo of this experience on stage together with four musicians : Mia Bodet (violin), Anna Faber (violin), Sophie Notte (cello) and Yodfat Miron (viola). Their Soloist Ensemble Kaleidoscop is an excellent Berlin collective that has made its name with multidisciplinary projects for years.
Pi investigates their intimate, discordant and passionate relationship with the music and the instrument through a series of portraits in which the language of music comes together with that of the body. Via breath, word or silence also the movement that the work loosens within is voiced. With great sensitivity and depth, floating between life and death and between individual and collective, the score of Sjostakovitsj is embodied unto the smallest nuances.
