Een strijkkwartet in beweging
Wat gebeurt er in het lichaam van de muzikant wanneer die speelt? Hoe doet muziek een lichaam bewegen, of zelfs dansen, heel concreet en precies, maar ook onzichtbaar binnenin? Sinds meer dan tien jaar ontwikkelt Pol Pi, te zien op NEXT 2018 (ECCE (H)OMO en ALEXANDRE) en NEXT 2021 (daté.e.s) een visionaire choreografische taal. Zijn voorstellingen richten zich op intimiteit en herinnering, en hechten een bijzonder belang aan de relatie tussen beweging en geluid. Een van de inspiraties is zijn eigen achtergrond als klassiek muzikant – lange tijd speelde Pi altviool.
Zijn nieuwste voorstelling, IN YOUR HEAD, is gebaseerd op een belangrijk 20ste-eeuws muziekstuk: het Strijkkwartet nr. 8 in C klein van Dmitri Sjostakovitsj. Tijdens zijn studie klassieke muziek speelde Pol Pi dit emblematische stuk van de Russische componist, opgedragen aan ‘de slachtoffers van oorlog en fascisme’, en beleefde hij een zelfs fysieke intensiteit, waarvan hij de impact tot op de dag van vandaag voelt.
De kwellende echo daarvan geeft hij nu weer in een podiumvorm, samen met vier musici: Mia Bodet (viool), Anna Faber (viool), Sophie Notte (cello) en Yodfat Miron (altviool). Hun Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop is een uitmuntend Berlijns collectief dat al jaren naam maakt met multidisciplinaire projecten.
Pi onderzoekt hun intieme, conflictueuze en passionele relatie met de muziek en het instrument, via een serie portretten waarin de muziektaal met die van het lichaam samenkomt. Via adem, woord of stilte wordt ook de beweging verklankt die het werk vanbinnen losmaakt. Met een grote gevoeligheid en diepte, zwevend tussen leven en dood en tussen individu en collectief, wordt de partituur van Sjostakovitsj tot in de kleinste nuances belichaamd.
