From '1-2-3 piano' on the playground to the omnipresent algorithms that control us : figures are everywhere. For a dancer counting is part of the rhythm and the choreography. For centuries dancers have counted their steps to 4, 6 or 8. In modern choreographies these series also become more complex.
What if dancers would count to the infinite, the French dancer and choreographer Boris Charmatz wonders. Then the numbers don't form a measure and they have no finishing point but they mark a search, the eternal metamorphosis, the invisible passing of time. For although bodies seem finite, movement is chiefly about potential.
In this work Boris Charmatz presents six dancers, among them he himself, and a chorus who recites an endless litany of figures. They take the omnipresence of figures as a starting point.
Charmatz : “I have always hated counting while dancing. I prefer letting my mind wander. In this piece, we count, speak and sing in order to dance, but especially : to be able to wander better.” In a world that is more and more a slave to algorithms, Infini offers a moment of wake in the middle of the infinite.
Boris Charmatz is one of the key figures of contemporary dance in France. In 2009 Charmatz was appointed as director of the Centre choréographique national de Rennes et de Bretagne, which he transformed into a modern museum of dance, the Musée de la danse.
