Howl

Sonja Jokiniemi (Finland)

Minimum age 18+
60 minutes

In the famous Cyborg Manifesto by Donna Haraway a human being is always a combination of organism and machine. According to the Finnish choreographer Sonja Jokiniemi, that's why we can also investigate relationships and intimacy in lifeless material. The newest work of Jokiniemi is a performance and an exhibition in one.  Howl merges bodies from painting, sculpture and live performance and thus examines a love that goes further than Man.

Jokiniemi searches between human and non-human beings for a space where the naive, intimate, surreal and unknown touch each other, a space for beauty that stands alone alongside mainstream aesthetics and that resists all boundaries. The result is a powerful metaphor for resistance and escape from all categorization and limiting forms.

Sonja Jokiniemi is a choreographer, performer and self-taught visual artist based in Helsinki, Finland. She makes transdisciplinary work with investigation into ecology, language and thought structures, neuro- and psychodiversity. She often works with objects, materials and drawings. Her participatory projects in the social sector and studies of Expressive Artistic Therapy interweave with her interest in a stage that claims space for intimacy, sincerity and broadening of norms. In 2017 her previous performance Blab could be seen at NEXT Festival.

Workshop + conversation Howl

Entangled relations: Inanimate worlds and other languages

This workshop is based on research questions of Jokiniemi´s performance works, where she explores alternative languages, sensorial communication and human / non-human relations. We will be unfolding practices around multitextural languages as proposition for other logics. We expand our imagination towards non-verbal communication and ideas on how things speak. In the workshop different senses are engaged, soft and hard objects worked with. Touch and voice are important element towards bodily exploration. Participation to the workshop needs no previous dance or performance experience and is open to everyone including all ages and abilities. Be ready to play!

After practical try outs, we will open up to a discussion.
