Hinoki

Máté Mészáros (Hungary)

50 minutes

Maté Meszaros danced with Ultima Vez for ten years and presents at NEXT the Belgian première of his latest performance Hinoki, for which he was also supported by the company of Wim Vandekeybus. Hinoki refers to a durable sort of wood used in Japan for building age-old temples. In a sea of wood snippings -it's almost like a magic gold desert !- six dancers confront each other. Death and decay, zest for living and rebuilding are the universal themes they play. In a supple and virtuosic choreography with a lot of turning movements, the dancers are driven by instincts and emotions. The live percussion and electronic music by composer Aaron Porteleki meticulously follows the movements of the dancers and sometimes pushes them to the utmost of their forces. An energetic festival opener !
