Innocent children act out key moments of the Dutroux affair.
Can you make children play the life of child-killer Marc Dutroux on stage ? The Swiss theatre maker Milo Rau thinks you can. Together with the Ghent Art Centre CAMPO he created a performance for the first time with children between 8 and 13. Using the biography of our country's most notorious criminal Milo Rau stages five key moments from the affair with these young actors. How can children understand the content of such a horrible story ? How do we react when we see them play scenes of violence or love ? And especially : what does this say about our own fears and desires ? Five easy pieces unfolds a wide panorama of the Belgian history, from the declaration of independence of Congo (where Dutroux grew up) to the great demonstration of the White March. Newspaper Trouw awarded five stars and wrote : “This is theatre in its most confrontational, pure and disconcerting form.” Pieter T'Jonck on Klara : “Simply fantastic.” Five easy pieces won the Special prize of the jury of the Belgian “Prix de la Critique Théâtre et Danse”.
In recent years Milo Rau and his Swiss company International Institute of Political Murder (IPM) have taken the great international stages by storm with unequalled political plays based each time on testimonies and reconstructions of historical facts. Milo Rau is sometimes called “the most controversial producer of his generation”. No taboo is sacred to him and yet he never provokes. On the contrary, his plays about the Rwandan genocide, the trial of the Ceausescus, the Yugoslavian civil war...they're only a few of the subjects he analyses with the scalpel of a surgeon. Hate Radio (2012) and The Civil Wars (2014) were already shown in past NEXT editions. For Five easy pieces he joined hands with CAMPO, appreciated all over Europe for its productions with children such as That Night Follows Day (Tim Etchells) and Before your very eyes (Gob Squad).
