Five dancers are being restrained by the overwhelming intensity of live percussion. They become a mass, a collective body. They break out of the bonds of the individual. The germ of the choreography Democracy was the drum quartet Dark Full Ride of Julia Wolfe, an American composer who is inspired by folk as well as classical music and rough rock. “There’s something revolutionary in the energy of Dark Full Ride,” Maud Le Pladec thinks. “The piece sounds like a cry, a protest meeting or even like an invitation to experience the unstable nature of the collective, and the contradictory forces that are at work there. “ An additional source of inspiration was the essay ‘Crowds and power’ by Elias Canetti. The performance evokes moments of togetherness as you can witness them in demonstrations or rituals. The various voices are independent, yet united. They are a polyphony, not a harmony. There is something that prevents the group from taking shape. But what and why ?
The French dancer and choreographer Maud Le Pladec makes Dark Full Ride resonate with new work by the young Italian composer Francesco Filidei. Democracy is the second part of a triptych based on work of the founders of the ensemble for contemporary music Bang on a cane (David Lang, Julia Wolfe, Michael Gordon)
