Be Careful

Mallika Taneja (India)

'Thoda Dhyaan Se', girls and women in India are instructed. 'Be careful. Take care of your attitude and your way of dressing.' In itself an innocent expression, but it has important implications : girls and women simply have to adapt to protect themselves. The Indian theatre maker and performer Mallika Taneja denounces this hypocrisy in this powerful performance.

The satirical Be Careful challenges our idea of safety. Taneja shows how people in India and elsewhere still link the choice of clothes of a woman and the horror she has to put up with for that according to some people. With her body Taneja reveals the hidden oppositions in female culture layer by layer. She criticizes a macho culture that hides behind ignorance and prudish morals and while doing so, she exposes the oppositions that are at the basis of India's floundering social progress. A clever statement about the daily violence that India's women have to endure.

Mallika Taneja's theatre work is strongly inspired by feminism. Be Careful was her great national and international breakthrough in one of the most dangerous countries in the world for women. The piece was no final point in Taneja's feminist and inclusive commitment. In her home town Delhi she set up Sex Chat Room, an informal monthly space where women, whatever their class or sexual inclination, can talk confidentially about sexuality.
