Women beyond the prejudice

"Atara ist eine kraftvolle Arbeit, choreografisch und tanzerisch uberzeugend" (Bettina Trouwhorst – Tanzweb.org)

In ATARA choreographer Reut Shemesh focuses on women, on the one hand in the Jewish-orthodox world and on the other hand in the secular world. Together with three dancers-performers she wonders what femininity, female sexuality and their place in society can be.

Reut Shemesh herself grew up in a family that was living both in the orthodox and the secular way. By means of re-enactments of events from her own environment via photography, text and movement a dynamic dialogue ensues between different points of view. Clichés, prejudices and doubts are equally dealt with and if necessary smashed to pieces.

Reut Shemesh is an Israeli choreographer who lives in Keulen at the moment and works in Germany, Israel and the Netherlands. The artistic spectrum of Shemesh stretches from contemporary dance over experimental film to poetry. Her creations have been presented at national and international festivals and nominated for a lot of prizes. For LEVIAH, a performance, a short film and a collection of stories about the trauma of female Israeli soldiers, Shemesh received the Keulen Tanztheaterpreis.
