Dancer rebels and regains freedom on stage.
Is free will an illusion ? Katerina Andreou asks herself the question in her new solo A kind of Fierce. This young Greek dancer and choreographer is interested in the contrast between authority and autonomy, between what a body should do and what a body wants to do. In these conservative times full of nostalgia for the past, a dominant crisis-thinking everywhere in Europe and fear of the future, she rebels on stage against all impossibilities. There is no alternative ? Not true according to Andreou. She couldn't care less about prescribed rules and aims at “a dance in which everything is important but nothing has importance”. A free dance, referring to dance pioneer Isadora Duncan and to the Afro-American dance style of krumping, in which Andreou is really 'in the moment'. A body in the highest state of alertness ! Music of the experimental rock group Chevreuil and hallucinating and alienating sounds of The Beatles form the sound décor of this remarkable solo. A kind of Fierce was awarded the prestigious Prix Jardin d'Europe for young choreographers at the past impulsTanz festival.
Katerina Andreou was born in Athens and is now living in Paris. She studied law and dance in Greece after which she danced with the Hellenic Dance Company and Iris Karayan. Later she also developed herself as a choreographer. She obtained grants for international development programmes such as Life Long Burning and DanceWeb at impulstanz in Vienna. She danced with choreographers DD Dorvillier and Emmanuelle Huyhn. With Lenio Kaklea she made the performance Margin Release also to be seen at this edition of NEXT. In her own work Andreou examines the mechanisms that precede to making decisions and the interaction between authority and autonomy. She already created the performances Manèges (in which she wilfully danced to other music than that heard by the public) and Sables (a continuous series of transforming tableaux vivants).
