3600

Radouan Mriziga (Belgium / Morocco)

60 minutes

Mesmerising play of light, mathematical precision and pure beauty.

In the group choreography 3600  the young Moroccan-Belgian choreographer Radouan Mriziga approaches dance with an architectural eye and builds further – also literally- on his unusual debut 55 which is also to be seen at NEXT. The four dancers in 3600 are both craftsman and architect and set up constructions that refer to the rich history of the desert castles from the Moroccan Sahara. They are fascinating brick creations which seem to exist in a dream world thanks to the subtle play with light. In 3600 he lets himself be led by modern architecture and islamic art, where the objects produced are a perfect meeting between aesthetics and function, full of mathematical precision and symbolism. An absolutely mesmerising performance !

Mriziga : “A lot of dancers are interested in architecture. I myself am especially influenced by the Maghreb school (the geometric approach) but at the same time I'm very fond of Western minimalism. In my work I examine the origin of rituals in old and contemporary cultures. I also dwell on the defining of art in islamic culture, where art is essentially a mathematical accuracy of geometric patterns. The artist is craftsman, engineer, philosopher and designer at the same time but sometimes also the executor of the divine scale.”

Radouan Mriziga followed dance training in Marrakech and Tunis before continuing his education at P.A.R.T.S., the school of dance of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. After graduating in 2012 he danced a.o. in the performance Half Elf Zomeravond of Bart Meuleman at Toneelhuis, in Primitive by Claire Croizé and in Re:Zeitung , a remake of the well-known Rosas piece. Mriziga is artist in residence at Moussem Nomadic Arts Centre and will be artist in residence at Kaaitheater from 2017 to 2021.
