De nieuwste creatie van Gisèle Vienne plaatst vraagtekens bij de manier waarop we de wereld waarnemen en interpreteren. Ze plaatst twee zwijgzame personages – een danseres en een jongen – in een nachtmerrie die vorm krijgt door pulserend licht, klank en muziek. Samen proberen ze te ontsnappen aan het grimmige verhaal dat voor hen geschreven is. Vienne vormt choreografische abstractie om tot een tableau vivant dat evolueert naar een theatrale vertelling, van verhaal naar realiteit. The Pyre (‘brandstapel’ in het Nederlands) speelt een fascinerend spel dat onze zintuigen en ons gevoel voor zingeving uitdaagt. De Amerikaanse auteur Dennis Cooper schreef teksten bij de voorstelling. Het Cultureel Persbureau noemt The Pyre “een strakke, ontregelende voorstelling” en “een overweldigend stuk dat de toeschouwer duizelig achterlaat.” En de Theaterkrant schrijft: “De voorstelling tart de zintuigen als een drug, even prettig als onaangenaam. De overdaad aan vorm irriteert en fascineert. Wie zich overgeeft wordt meegezogen. Het is een trip, een superesthetische, hallucinerende bad trip met een hypermodern en vernuftig lichtplan als vagevuur.”
Op de grenzen van theater, dans, poppentheater en plastische kunsten confronteert de Frans-Oostenrijkse theatermaakster Gisèle Vienne haar publiek telkens met de menselijke fascinatie voor het angstaanjagende en bedreigende.
