Residency at BUDA with premiere at NEXT festival: Three weeks in October/November 2024.
Deadline to apply: February 1, 2024
Mophradat has partnered again with Kunstencentrum BUDA and NEXT festival to offer a three-week residency for artists to finalize a new performance using BUDA’s facilities and artistic support, and premiere their work at NEXT Festival at the conclusion of the residency.
The selected artist (working with a maximum of three collaborators, i.e. up to four individuals in total) will have their travel and visa costs, per diem, and honoraria covered, in addition to receiving a contribution to their project’s production costs, and a presentation fee for the performance at NEXT Festival.
Kunstencentrum BUDA in Kortrijk is a platform for contemporary art festivals, an art house cinema, and one of the largest workspaces for performing arts in Belgium. Founded in 2006, BUDA constructs an artistic context in which the artist’s desire to create and learn is central. It offers time and space, customized support (logistic, technical, feedback), a network of artistic and professional contacts, and the possibility of an informal presentation for a test audience. BUDA is part of NEXT Festival.
Mophradat creates opportunities for artists from the Arab world through an inventive approach to funding, commissioning, collaborating, and gathering. Their way of working is imaginative and ambitious, inclusive and hospitable. They recognize the Arab world as a loosely-defined geography that is called home by people of diverse ethnicities, gender identities, religions, ideologies, and languages. The name Mophradat is an (eccentric) transliteration of the Arabic word meaning vocabulary. Their name speaks to the uniqueness of individual elements in a collective, but also to the way in which, brought together, they generate shared meanings and understandings.

Applicants must be working on a new and original project.
Applicants must be working with contemporary forms of performance (classical theatre, community theatre, and classical western dance such as ballet and so forth are not eligible).
Unconventional projects dealing with experimental forms and/or concerned with progressive discourses are encouraged to apply.

All applicants, whether selected or not, receive a response to their applications by March 1, 2024.
Preselected applicants will be contacted for a conversation.
Due to a high volume of applications and the confidentiality of the selection process, Mophradat cannot provide individual feedback explaining the reason an application was not selected.

The partners will support the selected applicants through the necessary visa applications; and if the artists are unable to travel due to visa refusals, the project will be compensated.
