In the social drama Les-Bas-Fonds (The Lower Depths) by Maxim Gorki we hear the voice of the dregs of society in the Russia of the beginning of the 20th century. Director Oskaras Korsunovas, a big name in Lithuanian theatre, leaves out a large part of the plot so that the characters of the actors can flow into their personages. In this rousing performance, the setting of which is like a cross between a press conference and a coffee party, the actors compete for the emotional sympathy of the spectators – they even offer them a glass of vodka. Seated behind a long table covered with food and drinks, the players hold up a mirror to our face showing us our unattainable desires and dark sides. The press even compared this piece to Waiting for Godot by Becket !
