Le Procès

Krystian Lupa (Poland)

300 minutes

Krystian Lupa, the living legend of Polish theatre, adapts one of the most mysterious stories in world literature. In Der Prozess we never get to know why Jozef K. is arrested. All logic is undermined in Franz Kafka's opaque world, which shows resemblances to the contemporary Polish society.

The performance was to première at the Polski Theatre in Wroclaw in November 2016. Because of the appointment of a new theatre director, who went against the will of the artistic team, Lupa suspended work on this creation. The Teatr Nowy (Lódz) and Le Quai – Forum des arts vivants (Angers) decided to resume this special project. In an age of democratic crisis in Europe reflection is badly needed. Who does Jozef K. represent and against what system does he fight today ?

Lupa about Le Procès : “We don't want that the work and the energy that were invested in it are shattered and wasted. We want to make a European co-production of this performance, which is a reaction to the present agitation and unrest. A common perspective of the future, a diagnosis of a crisis, which might lead to a new process : the renewal of trust in freedom.”

Krystian Lupa is one of the most important contemporary European theatre directors. Lupa is known for his organic way of working with text and actors, which is sometimes defined by the term 'laboratory rehearsals'. He was granted several prominent state awards, such as the Polish Gold Medal for Artistic Merits, the knighthood 'Polonia Restituta', the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the Austrian Ehrenzeichen für Wissenschaft und Kunst. In 2016 there was the Portrait Krystian Lupa at the Festival d'Automne in Paris, where three of his performances based on (theatre)texts of Thomas Bernhard were presented.
