Istehwaz (Reclaiming)

Nermin Habib (Egypt)

Minimum age 14+
40 minutes
In this solo dance performance, Egyptian choreographer Nermin Habib questions social oppression and psychological violence against women. She uses movement as a means of resistance and as a way to shape the body's resilience in a harsh and changing environment. Her body language - composed of traditional Balady and contemporary movements - revitalise society, placing women at the centre. Dance by dance, she reclaims space as a right to exist.
Nermin Habib is an Egyptian artist, choreographer and contemporary dancer, with a degree in Philosophy. Themes such as belonging and identity are a common thread throughout her work, delving through the dance culture heritage in her hometown. She is mainly interested in self-expression in a world where the use of the body as a means of expression is challenged, especially for women. She has already made several theatre and dance performances and films in which women literally play the leading roles.
