Cinematic, poetic and provocative masterpiece about the dregs of society.
Do we choose our fate or are our lives predestined ? Can we escape from the milieu in which we grew up ? In Imitation of Life director Kornél Mundruczó again stages a tragic situation from the dregs of society, where injustice is an unwritten law. A civil servant arrives at a little flat in Budapest to evict a single woman. However, an unexpected event prevents this, which places the originally ruthless civil servant in a moral dilemma. It gradually becomes clear that the run-down flat houses a few dark secrets which the new occupants will be confronted with... Mundruczó's new performance is cinematic, poetic and provocative at the same time. “A masterpiece”, decided website mottingers-meinung.at after the premiere. “Instead of gratuitous violence on stage Mundruczó opts for a tranquil and intimate look into the fate of individuals”, according to Süddeutsche Zeitung. “This is theatre that moves one to tears”, wrote ruhrbarone.de.
Kornel Mundruczó is a young but renowned Hungarian filmmaker whose six feature films are shown and showered with prizes at the most prominent European festivals. His most recent film White God won the prestigious award 'Un certain regard' at the festival in Cannes. Since 2003 Mundruczó has also been active in theatre, among others in Schauspiel Hannover and in the well-known Thalia Theatre in Hamburg, where Luk Perceval is the appointed director. In 2009 he founded the Proton Theatre in Budapest, which has produced his performances since then. Both the films and the stage plays of Mundruczó are characterized by their distressing themes in a hyperrealistic and intimate setting. NEXT has been following this Hungarian top talent for a long time. In 2014 it programmed his production Dementiaabout demented patients in an abandoned hospital. Last year we showed Disgrace after the post-apartheid novel by J.M.Coetzee.
