Michel Kiyombo/Studios Kabako - Masu Kaino - 20:00 - Budascoop - 35'
Just like Faustin Linyekula in Le Cargo, Michel Kiyombo digs deep into this own childhood memories in the dance solo Masu Kaino. Kiyombo's father died recently after a long, inexplicable illness. Already as a child Michel was always on the move to help his father in every possible way. In Masu Kaino, a curse in the Kizimba language which means something like 'undergo your fate every day again', Kiyombo reconstructs his family history and the mysterious stories that were going around about his father. Kiyombo is supported by Les Studios Kabako, the art centre Faustin Linyekula runs in Kisangani. He only just comes knocking at the dance firmament but shows great promise for the future. At NEXT Kiyombo and Linyekula join hands for a double bill !
Faustin Linyekula/Studios Kabako - Le Cargo - 21:00 - Budascoop - 55'
In Le Cargo the Congolese dancer and choreographer Faustin Linyekula is alone on stage for the first time. In earlier productions he told the turbulent history of this native country but now Linyekula examines why he loves dancing so very much. He takes us along to his childhood and the village where he observed all sorts of dance rituals, which he relives now, driven by the electric guitar music of Flamme Kapaya. “An incredible supple dance that sometimes just rocks”, this is what the New York Times wrote about Le Cargo. Faustin Linyekula is a pioneer of contemporary dance in Africa. He has worked together with the Comédie Française, is a welcome guest at the Festival d'Avignon and is supported by KVS in Brussels, where much of his work could be seen.
