The Blue Boy

Brokentalkers (Republic of Irland)

70 minutes

The Blue Boy is high-profile and penetrating theatre that leaves one dumb-founded. In recent years there has been a lot of turmoil about a bewildering number of cases of child abuse and maltreatment in Irish catholic health care institutions. For much too long, these stories have been swept under the carpet but since the 90ies they have gradually found their way out into the open. The grandfather of co-director Gary Keenan was an undertaker. When a child died in the institution in his neighbourhood, he was called in. He told his grandson the local legend about ‘the blue boy’ : the ghost of a pupil that had died in mysterious circumstances. Brokentalkers uses this story as a starting-point and adds testimonies of victims. Yet the performance is more than a documentary. A combination of dance, film, light and soundscape catapults the fear, the violence and the guilt into the auditorium. Raw and hard. In strange crumpled paper masks the seven players create a disturbing choreographic ritual.

The Irish Independent referred to Brokentalkers as “one of the most intriguing voices of the Irish theatre.” The company was founded in Dublin in 2001 by Feidlim Cannon and Gary Keenan. It is known for the quality and originality of its productions which are both innovative and accessible, physical and topical.
