Stefan Kaegi is a master at creating microcosms that reveal the paradoxes of society at large on a small scale. After the arms market and artificial intelligence, he now targets the building site. Notorious examples such as the unfinished site of the Berlin airport and the football stadiums in Qatar all show the same problem : late deliveries, cost adaptation, conflicts of interest between public and private players. In the midst of all that is the precarious worker.
In the compelling Société en Chantier Kaegi invites us to have a closer look at the paradoxes of the building world. During a two hours' visit to a building site the spectator walks from one station to the next. Eight experts speak successively : from the entrepreneur to the worker, the town planner to the investment adviser. Not only does the audience get an inside view into the many interests and invisible mechanisms behind our public space, it also observes the effect of its own actions on neighbouring groups. If we reconcile all these perspectives with each other, can we transform our cities and our society ?
The German Rimini Protokoll, founded in 1999 by Helgard Haug, Stefan Kaegi and Daniel Wetzel, is known for its documentary theatre. Often the performers are not actors but experts in one or other field : in Call Cutta the co-workers of a call centre speak, in the 100% project each time one hundred inhabitants of a particular town. Both in Germany and in Europe Rimini Protokoll is showered with prizes. The company could be seen thrice at the Berliner Theatertreffen which shows the best of the German-speaking region each year.
