Ramble Song

Berlin (Belgium)

Minimum age 16+
60 minutes

For once Berlin puts the documentary aside and focuses on an intriguing and associative narrative. With Ramble Song it catapults music – a floating bottom layer in previous work – to the foreground. In a series of film tableaux a poetic ramble develops inspired by the figure of the drifter and navigating between melancholy and black humour. Pictorial paintings or tranches de vie populated by people who have experienced both beauty and disappointment.

The public is seated in an installation in the form of an intimate mini-arena. This organism in sleep mode is filled up with life by means of live music and pictures. The soundtrack goes wide : with echoes of neoclassical music but also pumping krautrock and broadly flaring synth-driven soundscapes. The daily noise between our ears makes place for a musical universe that is crystallized in image – and vice versa.

In Ramble Song three musicians in the middle of the arena are fired on live by Berlin's house composer Peter Van Laerhoven. Since the very beginning he has always helped colour the universe of Berlin and he is supported live by Tim Coenen, Eric Thielemans and Tine Hubrechts. They give Ramble Song a different form from previous work by Berlin but also here forms of presentation are ingeniously puzzled into a powerful whole. The deep humanity even goes much deeper, past anecdotism and dominating story lines. Afterwards the music is available, both on vinyl and in digital edition.

“Berlin hands you the keys to document your inner world” (Gilles Michiels, De Standaard)
