ONE SONG: Histoire(s) du Théâtre IV

That one song that says everything

What is your history as a theatre maker ? At the invitation of NTGent Miet Warlop formulates an answer the way only she can do it. Twelve performers enter the arena for an enchanting ritual about leaving, life and death, hope and resurrection.

Through the metaphor of a live competition or concert, including commentator and cheerleader, Miet Warlop invites us to form a community and to lift up each other as in a celebration. In this way, the temporary becomes the universal, and the personal becomes part of the collective. That is the subtext of ONE SONG : how one song can give meaning to a whole society. Unity in diversity.

The past is the present is the future. And as a human being we are -whether we want it or not- a gladiator, in a fight with time. Beauty and comfort are not there for the taking, they happen to us. The need for connection makes us both vulnerable and tragic. Vulnerable in our physical limitations in spite of the efforts we make to strengthen our body. And tragic in our existential loneliness, the result of a consciousness that is characteristic of humanity.

Together the twelve performers go to extremes : through song texts, images and objects, oxygen and sweat, they evoke our condition humaine. Again and again, someone gets up to push his or her boundaries. They defy time and express a deeply human need : the moment when we can transcend our thinking body.
