At its première in 1888, Strindberg’s Lady Julie created quite a witch hunt. A one-night-stand of a young lady of noble birth with a servant of her father’s ? It was considered too daring and too explicit. Critics torpedoed the play, it found no editor and until 1906 it fell prey to severe censhorship. Today it is Strindberg’s best-known and most often performed work. It is especially praised for its innovative style. The version you can see at NEXT takes place in present-day Russia. The celebrated Russian theatre author Mikhail Durnenkov held on to Strindberg’s main story lines but rewrote the dialogues for a comtemporary ear. Producer Thomas Ostermeier unravels the complex triangular affair with consummate skill. For his Miss Julie he brings together two most prominent Russian actors - Chulpan Khamatova and Evgeny Mironovas well as his own much-praised German production team.

Ostermeier is director of the Berlin Schaubühne and one of the most important European producers. In 2000 he won the European Theatre Prize. He makes adaptations of classical authors such as Shakespeare and Ibsen but produces plays by contemporary playwrights such as Sarah Kane or Jon Fosse with equal passion. Whatever he chooses, he makes his subjects intensely relevant to our times.
