When is a body imaginative, when strictly disciplined ? The boundary between autonomy and authority is vaguer than we think, choreographer Katerina Andreou suspects. As a dancer she experiences pure freedom but in her training it was regulated all the same. She observes that same duality in all sorts of fitness trends, meditation hypes and self-help exercises. They make us discover the boundaries of our very personal body but at the same time lead us to a conformist sameness.
Zeppelin Bend is called after a joining knot of two symmetrically tied ropes, a metaphor for a close interweaving with something or somebody else. In this duet with Natali Mandila, Andreou goes in search of techniques that enable us to review the boundaries of freedom. Dancing and playing both women hover on a difficult balance. In this, the difference between them is the condition to explore what binds them.
As a dancer the French-Greek Katerina Andreou worked together with renowned choreographers such as Emmanuelle Huynh and Lenio Kaklea. In her work as a choreographer she is especially interested in the tension between disciplining and free will. For her solo A kind of fierce she was awarded the Prix Jardin d'Europe at the ImpulsTanz Festival in 2016. At NEXT 2018 she presented the solo BSTRD, in which – dancing behind a vinyl turntable – she wondered to what extent also the bastard can be authentic.
