Uncompromising confrontation with our darkest thoughts
Why is it that even when everything is peaceful, we continue declaring war to each other inside ? El Conde de Torrefiel creates with GUERRILLA a black comedy between fiction and documentary, which does not only question the history of Europe but also the future of a new generation. We follow a few young people in their everyday, seemingly peaceful activities : a conference, a tai chi lesson, an evening out. In the background the inside world of the actors trickles in : suppressed impulses, obscene fantasies and violent ideas. GUERRILLA mercilessly fires them at the audience as a disarming mirror of our own thoughts. On stage thus is created a venomous piece about the subtle subdued conflict that slumbers in each of us.
El Conde de Torrefiel, a self-willed collective from Barcelona presents withGUERRILLA the opening performance of this eleventh edition of NEXT. The young company of Pablo Gisbert and Tanya Beyeler is one of the prominent voices in the Spanish theatre landscape. Together the duo presents a visual and textual experience in which theatre, choreography, literature, music and the visual arts go together. The performances of El Conde de Torrefiel often consist of a series of tableaux vivants which are confronted with sharp texts.
The company made its debut in 2010 with La historia del rey vencido por el aburrimiento (the story of the kind beaten by boredom), followed by a few refreshing performances which attracted an ever growing group of fans in Spain. Thanks to this success El Conde de Torrefiel has taken its first steps abroad in the past years. In Europe the group performed at a.o. Kunstenfestivaldesarts, where it has been one of the family since 2015, and at the Festival d'Automne in Paris. The recent work of El Conde de Torrefiel deals with the twentyfirst century and the relationship between the personal and the political. Their most recent play La Plaza has premièred at Kunstenfestivaldesarts this year.
