Lenio Kaklea (Greece / France)

60 minutes

A warm, danced inventory of a moving town

In Aubervillers, one of the poorest municipalities of Paris, the Greek choreographer Lenio Kaklea set up a grand project. For eight months she stayed in the municipality where she talked with the inhabitants and registered their movements and habits. The results were gathered in a book, Encyclopedie Pratique, Portraits d'Aubervilliers.

The portraits render everyday actions of the inhabitants : going to school, helping a sick relative, boredom, work. The book formed the basis for this Portraits Choisis, in which the choreographer takes over their body language and portrays the desires that bind them. She navigates through a landscape of small, subtle gestures that make the town into what it is. Balancing between dance and performance Kaklea translates her meetings with the inhabitants into movement.

Lenio Kaklea graduated from the National School for Contemporary Dance (S.S.C.D.) in Athens, after which she took a two-year dance programme at the CNDC in Angers and the master SPEAP, an experimental programme around dance and politics that is led by philosopher Bruno Latour in Paris.

As a performer, Kaklea worked together with choreographers such as Alexandra Bachzetsis, Claudia Triozzi, Boris Charmatz, Emmanuelle Huynh, François Chaignaud and Cecilia Bengolea…. Since 2009 she has developed her own choreographic projects such as Matter of Act (2009), Fluctuat nec Mergitur (2010),Arranged by Date (2012), Deux .L (2013) together with Lucinda Childs, Margin Release (2015), A Hand’s Turn (2017) et Encyclopedie pratique (2018).

To support her work, she founded abd together with Lou Forster, an organization for choreographic and curatorial projects which investigates the intersecting lines between dance, research and critical theory.  Kaklea's work has been presented in institutes and at festivals such as the Centre Pompidou, ImpulsTanz, Athens & Epidaurus Festival, Quartz-Scène National de Brest, Latitudes Contemporaines, La Ménagerie de verre, documenta 14 Public Programs, PACT Zollverein en FAR Festival des Arts Vivants.
