De Vrek / L'Avare

Ivo Van Hove (Belgium / Netherlands)

105 minutes

The Miser is right up successful Flemish director Ivo van Hove’s street. In his hands, Moliere's classic comedy becomes a grim family portrait in which all relationships have been perverted by money. When father Harpagon decides to marry his son’s betrothed out of material considerations, a kingly drama ensues. Van Hove's direction is a razor-sharp analysis of a society in which the mechanisms of the business world seep into the most intimate sphere of life.
