Fires, famine, flood, melting ice, the collapse of biodiversity. The present crises confront almost every domain of our society with a complex problem. Tatiana Julien believes this is also the case for choreographers and dancers. How can they mobilize their creativity to represent alternatives
In Turbulence and Soulèvement (NEXT 2018) Tatiana Julien approached dance as a form of resistance against a violent unjust world. She believes that dance and theatre pre-eminently can reintroduce people to empathy, feeling and the magic of human nature. Such a dance requires maximal freedom, some rawness and ecstasy too, touch and contact.
But to proclaim this new world in theatre, one first has to break down one. After represents a rotting theatre on the verge of collapse. Dancers cry out there, break down their environment, have to find their way out of choas with their exhausted bodies. Above them looms a soundscape composed of the words of activists, climate scientists and politicians from the last fifty years. This is dance with a conscience, in search of a clean slate.
Tatiana Julien is a dancer and a choreographer. She founded the company C'Interscribo, with whom she likes to explore the boundaries of dance. She worked for opera and was the choreographer of Dancing Museums (2015-2017), an ambitious European project with four other choreographers and ten amateurs, which was to be seen at the Paris Louvre and the National Gallery of London. At NEXT 2018 Julien not only presented Soulèvement but also La Mort et L'extase.
