Kornél Mundruczó / Proton TheatreHungary
Kornél Mundruczo is a renowned Hungarian filmmaker whose films regularly bear away the palm at prestigious European festivals. Since 2003 he has also been active in theatre. His performances are characterized by distressing themes in a hyperrealistic and intimate setting. Dementia takes place in a well-known hospital in Hungary which was forced to close down. The building fell into decay, yet a few demented patients were left behind on the third floor. Mundruczó also confronts us here with existential questions :how does society have to deal with the growing number of patients with dementia ? Why should we help them if they are going to die anyway ? He expands these questions to themes such as humanity and spirituality. Tough but touching.
